One of the first things every child who learns Chumash knows, is that Yaakov Avinu asked his son Yosef, "V'asisa imadi chesed v'emes, al na tikbereini b'mitzrayim". Yaakov asked for a Chesed shel Emes from his son, to carry his bones up to Eretz Yisrael and chas v'shalom not to bury him in mitzrayim.
We are all familiar with what Rashi says on this Pasuk. Chesed that one does with a מת (deceased) is Chesed Shel Emes. That's because one cannot expect reciprocation from the dead, but does the chesed with a whole heart and a pure mind, for the sole purpose of doing a chesed.
One does not need a better description of the world renowned organization "Chesed Shel Emes". Chesed Shel Emes was established about twenty five years ago, with the goal of taking care of every single Yiddishe neshama (Jewish soul), and especially those who don't have someone to deal with the details of his or her burial, for whatever reason. Since its inception it has been running with amazing hashgocha pratis, under the leadership of its tireless founder, the personification of chesed, Rabbi Mendel Rosenberg.
During the past few years the name "Chesed Shel Emes" has spread far and wide. They have received calls about niftarim located throughout the United Stated and abroad. Neshamos that have wandered from place to place with no one to claim their bodies, have eventually, through unbelievable hashgocha, arrived at the doorstep of Chesed Shel Emes, who brought them to Kever Yisrael (Jewish Burial).
As its reputation continues to spread, the call volume in the office of Chesed Shel Emes is, unfortunately, continually rising. New members are constantly being trained into this avodas hakodesh, so that there are enough people available when necessary. To date Chesed Shel Emes has 275 male members and 180 female members, who are actively involved in preparing niftarim and niftaros for proper burial. Nothing keeps these heroic people from doing everything necessary to accomplish this great chesed. They travel to every imaginable neighborhood regardless of the time of day or night or the weather conditions.
In addition to all of the above, Chesed Shel Emes is involved with doing chesed for the living as well. Bikur Cholim Yad Yaakov, under the auspices of Chesed Shel Emes, an organization that has Bikur Cholim Rooms in several New York Hospitals, has earned the profound gratitude of countless patients and their families who benefited from their kind assistance.
And it's important to note that not a single one of Chesed Shel Emes' devoted volunteers gets even a dime, or even free equipment. In fact, the volunteers often pay for necessary equipment out of their own pocket, when necessary, and consider it a privilege. There is no honor or glory involved, only in the next world.
