Newark, NJ - A New Jersey contractor has for the second time destroyed a Jewish cemetery adjacent to their development site.

The situation is getting worse by the day, and with April showers approaching immediate action must be taken.

Chesed Shel Emes has been monitoring the situation and waiting for the developer/contractor and local authorities to rectify the condition but so far there has been no action.

In 2006 the same developer/contractor did the same exact thing on the eastern side of the cemetery, and only after intervention by Chesed Shel Emes and media pressure did local authorities force the contractor to cease further destruction and repair the damage, however some graves were permanently wiped out.

In 2007 the developer started work on the western side of the cemetery and took some measures to prevent a reoccurrence of damage to the cemetery.

In the beginning of 2009 construction at the site was stalled and a combination of deterioration and natural conditions has caused a repeat of the 2006 disaster.

Since 2006 Chesed Shel Emes has periodically visited the site and recently discovered that a large portion of the already failing support system has been completely removed, since that discovery Chesed Shel Emes has continuously visited the site hoping to see the people responsible taking corrective actions.

Since nothing is being done and in light of the above, Chesed Shel Emes is prepared to do the following.

1) A press conference is being called for today at 3:30pm to inform the local residents, authorities and families of loved ones buried in the cemetery, of the ongoing situation.

2) Chesed Shel Emes is in the process of retaining a construction company and engineering firm to guide us in the proper way of how to prevent future damage and repair damage already done.

3) Chesed Shel Emes will retain a reputable law firm, to obtain all available information from local building departments, zoning boards for work permits requested / issued for engineering reports filed, and site inspection reports conducted to reveal and hold accountable the parties responsible.

4) Chesed Shel Emes will appoint an orthodox Rabbi to continuously monitor all work being done to assure that all work is being done in accordance with “(Jewish Law) guidelines, within local building codes.

Chesed Shel Emes is a New York based non-profit organization founded 25 years ago by Rabbi Mendel Rosenberg to provide proper Jewish burials for underprivileged departed who would otherwise not have the means. In addition to preserve the already buried, to rest in peace, furthermore to recover & inter Jewish remains from traumatic incidents nationwide.

Chesed Shel Emes currently has hundreds of volunteers nationwide and six non-profit cemeteries throughout New York and New Jersey to serve the Jewish community.

The press conference will take place at the Cemetery
